Highlights of Eddington from 2023

This year, Eddington has continued to build the residential community as a welcoming and growing part of Cambridge.

Retail openings and placemaking events have helped to provide residents and neighbours with opportunities to form friendships and experience Eddington as a new neighbourhood in the City. While new homes – both completions and those in construction – will provide places for people to live in a sustainable location, and support the continued success of the Cambridge eco-system. Here’s a summary of some of the highlights from 2023.

Retail openings

Local businesses are the anchor of the retail offer at Eddington. Local coffee company, Brew, opened in Spring 2023, and Cambscuisine successfully launched their eighth restaurant in the city called The Astronomer in Eddington in Autumn 2023.  Fit-out works are currently taking place on Dulcedo Social, the new all-day cafe / bistro space in Eddington Square which will open in early 2024. Keep an eye on our website and social media accounts for the latest news on new openings and announcements.

Placemaking and Community events and initiatives.

Bringing residents and neighbours together through a special series of pop-up events has provided activation of our civic space, Eddington Square and build community connections which is at the heart of Eddington. The popular Eddington Beer Garden in April, Sustainable YOU in September, and the Eddington Festive Market in November, all brought music, activities, joy and more to the space – watch out for more events coming to Eddington Square next year.

Community meet-ups, fitness classes, book clubs, foodPark and of course the highly popular Parkrun, take place around Eddington with the drive and enthusiasm from local volunteers, residents and entrepreneurs and we are so proud of the offer which continues to grow and support active lifestyle and a strong sense of togetherness in Eddington.

The University continued its commitment to sustainable travel, awarding Whippet a new contract to run the Universal bus as a key public transport route serving Eddington and the wider community with a new fleet of electric buses launched in September, as well as on-going travel planning and cycling initiatives that encourage active travel.

New Homes

When the University of Cambridge established the need for development at North West Cambridge, the primary focus for the first phase was to provide much-needed housing for the City and the University.  Phase one continues its build out with residential developers working on high-quality schemes matching the design and sustainability standard set by the University’s aspirations and masterplan. Developer, Hill have completed homes designed by Alison Brooks Architects this year at Rubicon, and they continue their construction works around the neighbourhood. Further planning consents were granted by the local authorities for market housing to Durkan with Latimer Housing, and Present Made with Apache Capital.

As Eddington continues to grow with more homes and community events, we hope you’ll join us and be part of our neighbourhood in 2024.
