Open Eddington 2019: Hands-on activities and family fun

Location: Storey’s Field Centre

Open Eddington takes place on Saturday 14 September.

Activities are free and run from 10am to 4pm and include everything from music making and instrument building to bike activities, art and crafts and treasure hunts.

Events will be taking place in and around the Market Square and Storey’s Field Centre.

Arts, craft and music

Junkyard Orchestra will be hosting band workshops where you can try out the instruments, compose a own song or make an instrument from recycled materials to take home.

Artscapers – help make a giant piece of art for Open Eddington 2019 and learn about the community art programme in Eddington and local schools.

Woodcraft Folk – outdoor games, arts and craft for all ages. Woodcraft Folk is a movement for children and young people to help explore the world through games, crafts, drama, debates and outdoor activities.

Arts club – children’s activities using a wide range of arts materials.

Showtime – Learn about the behind the scenes elements at the Storey’s Field Centre and try your hand at the lighting rig. 11.30am-12.30pm, 1.30pm-2.30pm. (Booking required)

Photo competition – Enter for a chance to win a professional smartphone photo lens set! Simply take your best photo of the day and tag it with #OpenEddington19 on Twitter or Instagram.

Build a giant brick mosaic – Join the team in the Athena Sales & Marketing Suite on Eddington Avenue to help build a 500-piece brick mosaic picture together.

Outdoors and sports

Bird spotting competition – pick up your guide from the Mears stand in the Market Square.

Eddington treasure hunt with prizes – pick up the sheet from the info point in the Market Square.

Penalty kick contest – win a tree for your school and see some of the machinery that help keep Eddington working (located on the cricket pitch behind the play area).

Driver’s seat – sit in the cab of a 18 tonne flat-bed truck.

Cycling activities

Cycling fun, games and information at Eddington all day including:

Have a go bike show –Try out different and unusual bikes including recumbents, karts, tandems, cargo bikes, mini folders and electric bikes!

Pedal powered Scalextric – Using bikes to control and power the cars around the track. Going head-to-head, riders need skill as well as power to win the race and top the leader board.

Pedal powered bubble machine – We provide the bikes and mixture – you provide the power to blow out the bubbles!

Cycle sprint challenge – Riders go head-to-head on static racing bikes. Pedal as fast as possible over a simulated 200m to get to the top of the leader board.

Getting to Eddington

Get to Open Eddington for free on the U-bus. On Saturdays the service runs from the railway station to Eddington via the city centre – click here for the timetable.

Alternatively Eddington is a short cycle journey from central Cambridge.

There will be very limited parking available so we encourage visitors to use sustainable transport methods to get to Eddington. Drivers can park at the Madingley Road Park and Ride, a short walk from Eddington. For more information click here.
