Cambridge Jazz Festival: A Waltz in New Orleans

Saturday 19th November 2022 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: Storey’s Field Centre

A Waltz in New Orleans is a new one act play which received its off-West End premier during Black History Month at The Cockpit Theatre on Tuesday 12th October 2021. A one man show accompanied by a live band, it is the tale of the greatest jazz musician you’ve never heard of, narrated by the braggadocios drummer here to convince you that he invented jazz.

The debut play from writer, producer and drummer in the play Lucas Keen, A Waltz in New Orleans began life as a radio drama written and aired during the lockdown of 2020 and was developed in 2021 with the support of The Arts Council’s Developing Your Creative Practice fund.

Lucas Keen explained, “I wanted to bring the musician so often in the shadows (the drummer) to the forefront to tell the story of how jazz was born at the turn of the century in New Orleans, and to honour and celebrate Black excellence”.
