The University of Cambridge awarded the Construction Client of the Year accolade in Building Magazine
On Tuesday (4 November), the construction industry’s Building Awards crowned the University of Cambridge as the Client of the Year.
The award, which was chosen from a shortlist, compiled by industry leaders and the judging panel, highlights the outstanding achievements of the University of Cambridge in the development and construction industry.
The strategic development of Eddington and Cambridge West as new opportunities to support sustainable, innovation-led growth through the creation of vibrant and forward-thinking places, demonstrates the breadth and depth of the Estates Division’s professional expertise, alongside its unique role in the city which requires long-term stewardship of its estate to support the University’s long-term academic mission.
The Building Award judges’ Client of the Year citation stated:
“The University of Cambridge exemplifies long-term, socially responsible client leadership through its urban extensions, most notably Eddington. Designed to provide high-quality, sustainable housing for staff, the scheme integrates community facilities, green infrastructure and active travel networks, directly responding to Cambridge’s acute housing and transport pressures.
“Significant progress has been achieved through detailed master planning, extensive public consultation, and successful delivery of Phase 1, which now serves as a benchmark for sustainable, mixed-use development.
“With further phases advancing through planning and pre-construction, the University demonstrates a clear commitment to creating resilient, inclusive places. This forward-looking approach highlights Cambridge as an outstanding, visionary client.”
David Smith, Interim Head of Non-Operational Projects from the University of Cambridge said:
“We’re delighted to be recognised as a visionary client and responsible developer, building sustainably for long-term benefit and impact. The construction industry’s recognition of our commitment and vision highlights not only the University’s high standards, but also the strength in the partnerships amongst our colleagues, wider consultant, developer and construction teams who work alongside us to realise our plans. Our work at Eddington and Cambridge West is continuing apace, with proposals that reflect our dedication to shaping vibrant, enduring communities for generations to come.”
