Grow Club Launches in Eddington

On Saturday 26th April 2025, over 250 residents came together in Eddington Place to celebrate the launch of Grow Club, a new community initiative focused on sustainable food growing, boosting biodiversity, and building a more connected, greener neighbourhood.

Supported by the University of Cambridge, Grow Club introduced six new community planters to Eddington Place. These planters, filled with seasonal vegetables and pollinator-friendly plants, are designed for everyone to use, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out. The aim is simple: to grow local food, support biodiversity, and bring people together through shared spaces.

The launch event was full of activity and inspiration. Residents rolled up their sleeves for hands-on gardening workshops, supported by expert advice from RHS award-winning horticulturist Tim Jennings and the team at Cambridge Sustainable Food. From practical growing tips to discussions about the role of food in building resilient communities, the day was all about learning, sharing, and getting involved. The presence of Hawkins Brown and Max Fordham further deepened the learning principles of the event, as they led an engaging interactive activity that invited residents to share their ideas for future green spaces in Eddington, contributions that will help shape future design and sustainability proposals through meaningful community input.

Grow Club is part of the University’s wider vision for a healthy, sustainable, and socially connected community at Eddington, a vision shaping the future of the neighbourhood through an evolving masterplan, currently in its third phase of public consultation.

As the planters start to flourish, Grow Club will become a symbol of local stewardship, not just growing food and flowers, but helping to grow a stronger community rooted in sustainability and collaboration.

To keep the momentum going, and to maintain the plants, we’ve set up a WhatsApp group for Grow Club members and anyone interested in getting involved. It’s open to everyone, and it’s a great space to:

  • Share planting tips and photos
  • Ask questions and offer advice
  • Coordinate times to tend to the planters
  • Get support from the Eddington team
