Eddington’s next generation share their ideas for the future at Design Exhibition
On 16th July, Year 3 and 4 pupils from the University of Cambridge Primary School (UCPS) showcased their designs for three areas in the future phases of Eddington at an exhibition in the Storey’s Field Centre.
Parents and members of the public came along to view their works on display with the children being on hand to explain their imaginative ideas for what Eddington should look like in years to come.
Children were introduced to three areas of the future phases masterplan: the shared gardens, the extended Brook Leys and the play area in the North West of the future phases. They were then asked to come up with a design for one of those spaces on an A4 sheet of paper and let their imaginations run wild.
The children had a wide range of ideas, from which we were able to identify several key themes which can help inform the design of those three areas in the future phases. One of the strongest patterns was the children’s use of height in their plans, with the idea of being high up coming through. There was a strong focus on water, also featured in their designs. They also considered the need for intergenerational spaces, as several of the children had thought of where their parents would go when they are using play areas, for instance.
The ideas from the designs have been collected together and form a key piece of work which will be referred back to as the future phases progress in the years to come.
The children made a significant effort, for which they were thanked by receiving a set of coloured pencils.
UCPS teacher Harriet Lang said: “It’s inspiring to see how imaginatively the children have envisioned the future of Eddington. Their ideas show not only creativity, but a strong sense of community, sustainability and innovation. These designs remind us that the future belongs to them and their vision shows us what’s possible when we dream big.”
