Eddington highly commended for “Creating Better Places” at prestigious transport awards

The annual CIHT awards – which were held on June 4th 2025 – celebrate the very best of transport planning across the UK, bringing together industry experts and showcasing inspiring projects.

The ‘Creating Better Places’ award recognises how outstanding design and implementation of schemes in towns, cities and rural areas improve the places around them for people and the environment.

Eddington exemplifies thoughtful urban planning, prioritising accessible travel, sustainability and placemaking. The extensive travel planning and interventions at the development have helped residents choose sustainable travel – with 79% of residents traveling by sustainable modes to work. Whether it’s cycling, walking, scooting or using the Universal bus, Eddington residents are significantly reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner environment.

This recognition from the CIHT also demonstrates the University’s commitment to create a place with value, not only to the new community but for future generations of its staff and students.

Stewart Bethell, Senior Transport Coordinator at the University of Cambridge said: “This recognition is a testament to the University’s sustainable vision for Eddington, and the dedication of a multi-disciplinary team of spatial, town and transport planners, as well as environmental and placemaking experts from within the University, who have worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality.”

Future phases of the development will be considered in the coming months, with the masterplan for the next stage of the North West Cambridge site due to be submitted in September.
