Public consultation on Phase 2 Infrastructure proposals at North West Cambridge Development

The University of Cambridge is holding a virtual public exhibition on the proposals for the Phase 2 Infrastructure as part of the continuation of the North West Cambridge Development.

Since 2013 the North West Cambridge Development have been building Phase 1 of the development, the area now known as Eddington. Eddington opened in 2017 and is the heart of the new residential community. Unprecedented in scale and ambition, Eddington is a new place complete with award-winning community facilities which are open to the wider community to enjoy.

Phase 2, part of the Outline Planning Consent granted in 2013, will build on this legacy, focusing on providing more essential housing in the area. The development is ultimately set to have 1,500 homes for University and College staff, 1,500 private houses for sale and accommodation for 2,000 postgraduates. Phase 2 is in South Cambridgeshire, to the West and North of Eddington, reaching further up Huntingdon Road and down to the land behind the Madingley Road Park and Ride.

The Phase 2 Infrastructure work does not contain any plans for the housing in Phase 2, instead looking at the necessary public realm and utility infrastructure required for housing. This includes:

  • Extensions to the main primary road networks, including a new junction with Huntingdon Road, the completion of the permanent Ridgeway connection to and from Eddington for walking and cycling and a cycleway to link between Bunker’s Hill and the new Huntingdon Road Junction
  • Extensions to the Brook Leys landscape along the western edge of the site, to provide informal areas for play, walking and cycling
  • A further area of formal sports, including floodlit, all-weather facilities, full-size grass pitches and smaller formal sports areas, alongside a 6-team changing facility
  • A significant area of allotments
  • New and exciting play areas distributed across the site, with a variety of different play options
  • Public art
  • Extensions to the sustainable engineering features of Eddington, including the district heating network, underground bins and water recycling features

Full details of the proposals and an FAQ on Phase 2 Infrastructure can be found here.

We are undertaking this consultation to share the plans for Phase 2 Infrastructure and to take any comments you may have on board. We will use any responses to inform the ongoing scheme design, before we finalise and submit our planning application. The comments received will be summarised as part of our application. All comments will be recorded anonymously.

It is the University’s ambition to submit planning applications for these works in Winter 2020. The public consultation period runs until Wednesday, September 30. The best way to comment on the proposals is to complete a short survey here or contact the team via email at
